iPhone Warning

After a warning from prominent hacker, pod2g, Apple is warning iPhone users to be wary of messages being received via SMS. According to the source, a flaw in Apples software allows other hackers to change the appearance of incoming messages. Do not trust that new messages are coming from a well-known source. The hackers can use the flaw in software to change the phone number that the text appears to be coming from.

As of now, there doesn’t seem to be an immediate source for worry. Just be sure to pay attention and be cautious if you receive any text messages on your iPhone asking for any sensitive information. You cannot always be positive that what you are sending is being sent to an intended recipient.

Another way to protect yourself from hackers is to use the iMessage system. Apple has suggested to use this as your preferred messaging program because the senders information is verified, which prevents from these kinds of attacks.

Apple does take security for its users very seriously and are working to resolve the gap in information protection  in the iOS.

Waze for a Free GPS

The iPhone has been a great device for users of Apple products. It offers a fantastic battery life and easy to use interface. While it does come with an included map program there hasn’t always been a free GPS service to navigate you while you drive…until now. Waze is a free app you can download from the Apple App Store that will help you find the quickest route to where ever you need to be.

“When you download Waze, you not only get a free navigation, but also become a part of the local driving community n your area, joining forces with other drivers nearby to outsmart traffic, save time, and improve everyone’s daily commute”- Waze.com

This is a driver generated service. As you and other users locate elements in your route that could slow down a commute, the program automatically warns you of what is ahead and will reroute you to save time in your travels. If you find any issues with street names, roads or other discrepancies, you are able to correct them.

Know where speed cameras, road hazards, accidents, traffic jams or other driving delays are before you are affected by them. You can even report sightings to others on the same path with a touch of a button.

This program is not restricted to only the iPhone or apple products but can be used by Android users as well. For more information check out the Waze Guided Tour video or stop into any Express Verizon location.

iPhone 5…Not Yet

Apple held one of their infamous press conferences yesterday to make a big announcement, and it wasn’t the release of the iPhone 5. They say that it will be coming, but, as for a date, we are still in the dark. Instead, the public was notified of the release of the iPhone 4S.

While it looks identical to the current model, there have been some great improvements. The new version will include a dual-core processor, the same central processing unit as the iPad 2. This will allow for your apps to run faster. You will also experience better graphics for new games that are soon to be released.

Instead of the standard 5 megapixel camera that we are accustomed to having in the current model, the 4S will be equipped with a whopping 8MP camera and the ability to record 1080p videos. Allowing you to capture great memories in the clearest form ever offered on an Apple phone.

The 4S carried by AT&T and Verizon will be the same. This means you will now be able to use Verizon’s CDMA network in the US and other  CDMA countries. Also, you can access the GSM capabilities when traveling internationally to other countries.

Keep your eyes peeled for new memory units of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Instead of just having the option of 16 or 32 GB of memory, Apple announced that an 8GB iPhone 4 and a 64GB iPhone 4S are to be available soon.

In short, although there is no completely new version of the iPhone, you can still get an advanced 4S with greater capabilities.

Express Verizon would also like to show our condolences for the recent loss of Apple CEO Steve Jobs. He was a visionary in the field that we work in and we greatly appreciate his contributions to the advancement of mobile communications.

Never Lose an Evernote

I must admit that I am an offender of jotting important things down on a sheet of paper and then completely forgetting where I left the paper for ‘safe keeping’. This is where my Droid has stepped up to save the day once again. I have tried the common task-list apps and calendar concoctions but, until now we not fully satisfied with the reminders and note keeping, until now.

New York Times recently voted the app Evernote into its Top-Ten list of Apps to have and it is perfectly clear as to why this mobile tool was chosen. In your Evernote account, you can make text notes, save a webpage, save a photo and even grab a screen shot. All items that you add can be tagged and organized into separate notebooks. Everything you have in your notes is processed, indexed and completely searchable. Can’t remember which restaurant served that great dish? At a restaurant, take a picture of the menu and then Evernote will find the item on it you are looking for later via the text in the photo. You can even map and locate where each of your notes was created all over the world. Create an account for yourself on Evernote and you will be able to access all of your notes from other devices; you never have to stress about trying to remember an important piece of information.

Mashable reports that the newest version released for Androids trumps all previous editions, including the current iPhone edition. You are now free to share your notes by posting them on Facebook or Twitter. Protect and lock your notes via a PIN and use the onscreen widget to control your Evernote notes with one touch. Perhaps the best part of the improved Evernote is the ability for users to access, view and edit notebooks that have been shared with them. The new concept is to grant people a place to combine their personal and  social memories.

So if you would like to find an easier way to keep tabs on all your information and share what you find with others, Evernote on Android is absolutely the first one to try. If you do, feel free to let me know what you think.

Verizon Gets iPhone

So for everyone who’s been holding their breath for the iPhone to come to Verizon Wireless, you can now exhale.

Ready? Ok. It is official, Verizon will soon be carrying the infamous Apple smartphone. Express Wireless is unsure as to what date will start sales of the product in our locations. To be very honest, most of the team has vowed that we would rather carry our Droids than the new product if you want to know why you can see refer to the previous posting “Love the Droid Drop the iPhone” from us comparing the devices.

For more information stop by one of our stores in Enfield, Ellington, Vernon, or Stafford Connecticut. You can also call our location at 1-800-444-2899.

Love the Droid, Drop the iPhone

I hear it every week, “When is Verizon getting the iPhone?” I’m very sorry to the Apple – obsessed (my mother included) but, I don’t really have too much of a concern as to when the product will hit Verizon stores, like ours at Express Wireless. I am a proud owner of my iPod Touch but, that is where I draw the line with Apple. Our team honestly believes we are already carrying multiple phones that can trump the iPhone on it’s best day. The question becomes, can we stray from the mighty Apple iPhone brand name and venture into a world of better options?

To start off with, we currently carry 10 different Droid models: Droid X, Droid 2, Droid 2 Global, Incredible, Continuum, Fascinate, Droid Pro, Droid Citrus, Ally, and Vortex. You want options? We got ’em! You could choose the processor speed, camera quality, physical or virtual keyboard, size, style, and brand. Ultimately, you can choose what phone you want to go with your software versus having one choice in phone model.

You can investigate the pros and cons of any device. They are all different and that’s where we get options. Some people haven’t had any problems with their iPhones, others are not so happy. Facedialing, random muting and hang-ups, defective rear cameras, easily broken glass front, these are some of the common issues reported. One of the main problems reported was the phone losing signal when held in the left hand due to the antenna design, dubbed the “death grip“. Apple’s response? They claimed there was no problem or suggested you purchase a $30 bumper case to lower the result. There were murmurs of a recall but, it doesn’t seemed like Apple was too worried about the problem. I believe their name is bigger than their product, causing people to lunge after a piece of equipment that isn’t as good as it’s cracked up to be.

I’m not suggesting that the Droids are flawless. It is, however, much easier to handle a Droid problem. First is a soft reset, pulling and checking the battery. Can’t do that on an iPhone. What if it’s running slow because the memory is full? Droid: get a bigger memory card and pop it in the phone. iPhone: buy a whole new phone with bigger memory capabilities. Insuring the iPhone can be a nightmare trying to figure out what is covered by which providers. Droids are fully covered by the insurance offered in the store when you purchase the device. Want to do some troubleshooting? You will have to make an appointment at the Apple store which is always packed. Droids can be walked right into our Express Wireless in Enfield CT, or any Verizon store for that matter, with no appointment.

Does your iPhone come with free turn-by-turn navigation? Nope. I haven’t even found a free navigation app you can download on the iPhone app market. Look at the softwar creators, Apple vs. Google. Who do you think is bigger? I can keep going on and on about the comparisons. If you want the apps the functionality and the option in phone style, don’t waste your time with the iPhone. Verizon can bring on the iPhone (if they must) but, I will still happily guide people to the better choice. The Droid.

For more information, visit us at 549 Hazard Ave in Enfield, CT 06082, or our other locations in Vernon, Stafford or Ellington, CT.  You can also reach us by calling (860) 749-7077. We are also still offering $50 off any of our smart phones if you would like to try out one of these great phones for yourself!
